Pino Lella, an Italian teenager wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis, but when his family home is destroyed by Allied bombs, he joins an underground group helping Jews escape over the Alps. It is then that he falls in love with Anna, a widow six years his senior. Pino's parents, attempting to protect him from combat, force him to enlist as a German soldier. As a German soldier, he becomes the personal driver for General Hans Leyers, a powerful commander in the Third Reich.
