Evenings of Engagement with Raggedy Edge

August 17, 2022

Evenings of Engagement is a series of events aimed at adults, with the purpose of offering exciting, interesting, fun, or educational experiences.

Join us! back this summer on our back lawn for our first outdoor concert featuring

Raggedy Edge

Singer-songwriters Bob Farley and Lynn Perdzock believe their songs and music offer an upbeat, positive listening alternative. The duo has written, recorded and performed nationwide, bringing their own brand of folk-rock music to thousands. From love songs (of course) to cautionary tales of planetary survival, their music delves into their feelings for each other and the world around them. Both Lynn and Bob began their musical journeys as children playing guitar and singing to various folk singers, rock bands, and even classic spirituals. When a chance encounter at an open mic in Ohio brought them together, they soon found out they both wanted to make their solo shows into duo shows. After a couple of rehearsals, they decided to combine their varied styles and abilities to become Raggedy Edge, a place where many kinds of music exist in harmony and peace, past, present, and future.

Bring your own chair, this event will be held outdoors on our back lawn. You can bring your own food and beverages.

Depending on the weather forecast, the location of the event will be changed to the library's Community Room.

"TEN PICTURES: A HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY" A LECTURE BY PETER HAY HALPERT

August 31, 2022

The ancient Greeks first discovered the principles of the camera obscura sometime between the IV and V centuries B.C. but photography as we know it was invented in the XIX century. The first “photograph” was taken by Joseph Niepce in 1814, however, it wasn’t until 1839, when Louis Daguerre and William Henry Fox Talbot simultaneously released completely different processes for capturing and holding an image, that we entered the age of photography.

Today, photography is a language that everybody speaks. We walk around with cameras in our pockets, in the form of our smartphones. Photography is the medium of our times; we instinctively understand and relate to photographic images, while contemporary paintings often require some kind of explanation and context.

How did we get to this point in less than 200 years?
We’ll look at the history of photography through 10 pictures (and a few asides and detours), running from 1839 through to cutting-edge contemporary work. Through this tour, we’ll examine some of the key issues that photography has dealt with, and get to know some of the most important artists who have worked with the medium.
