Books 'n' Bites - “All grown up” by Jami Attenberg

April 9, 2019

Who is Andrea Bern? When her therapist asks the question, Andrea knows the right things to say: she’s a designer, a friend, a daughter, a sister. But it’s what she leaves unsaid—she’s alone, a drinker, a former artist, a shrieker in bed, captain of the sinking ship that is her flesh—that feels the most true. Everyone around her seems to have an entirely different idea of what it means to be an adult: her best friend, Indigo, is getting married; her brother—who miraculously seems unscathed by their shared tumultuous childhood—and sister-in-law are having a hoped-for baby; and her friend Matthew continues to wholly devote himself to making dark paintings at the cost of being flat broke. But when Andrea’s niece finally arrives, born with a heartbreaking ailment, the Bern family is forced to reexamine what really matters. Will this drive them together or tear them apart?

Told in gut-wrenchingly honest, mordantly comic vignettes, All Grown Up is a breathtaking display of Jami Attenberg’s power as a storyteller, a whip-smart examination of one woman’s life, lived entirely on her own terms.

Evenings of Engagement with Matthew Gurnsey "The Kilted Man"

April 10, 2019

Gurnsey charms his audiences, sweeping them into tales of wayward voyages, unrequited love and the vibrantly colorful lives of the every-man beloved of many Irish tales. His unique talents with traditional Celtic instruments such as the concertina, bodhran, bones and mandolin, add an air of authenticity to each piece and his stirringly rich bass voice provides the foundation for the hauntingly beautiful melodies.

Skiing Book Club

April 12, 2019

Vail Public Library’s (VPL) Skiing Book Club takes readers to the slopes for an active book club. We meet in the area between the water fountain near Bistro 14 and Gondoly's Pizza at the top of Eagle's Nest Gondola, to talk books and then ski (we intend to ski blue, groomed slopes). Attendees must have their own ski pass, the library will not be providing lift tickets or refreshments. Our Skiing Book Club is a fun, social outing, but at the same time you are getting the mental and physical activity essential to a healthy brain.

The selection for the month of April is…“All grown up” by Jami Attenberg

Evenings of Engagement with Jerry Barlow

April 17, 2019

Vail Public Library is pleased to once again welcome acclaimed Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow in concert. Jerry brings traditional Celtic tunes alive by sharing the history, humor, and legends behind the music.  “Jerry Barlow … a performer who is skilled, funny and riveting.  Out of the many musicians performing today, the vast majority are skilled in either performing on their instrument or in entertaining an audience.  It’s very rare and extremely enjoyable to see a musician at the very top of his craft in both areas,” says Scott Beach, Director of Colorado Celtic Entertainment.

Evenings of Engagement with Dave Lively - "WHO WAS THE SCULPTOR IN BUCKSKIN?"

April 24, 2019

Dave Lively is a dynamic speaker who specializes in shining light on hidden narratives.

Dave is a well-known local historian, Certified Interpretive Guide, and Certified Tour Guide with unsurpassed knowledge and passion for the region and is committed to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.

Let Dave introduce you to "WHO WAS THE SCULPTOR IN BUCKSKIN?"-  a man who was so much more than a sculptor and artist. After spending much of his youth hunting and sketching in the Colorado mountain wilderness of the 1870s, Alexander Phimister Proctor’s talents took him throughout the U.S. and on to Paris and Rome. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, incurable wanderer, and confidant to many prominent figures of his day. Proctor was deeply revered as both America’s premier animal sculptor and an unfailingly warm and enthusiastic human being.
