Teen Tech Week is when libraries make the time to showcase all of the great digital resources and services that are available to help teens succeed in school and prepare for college and 21st century careers.

As you may know, the YALSA board has decided to re-envision TTW and TRW and create a larger advocacy/awareness campaign to promote the importance of year-round teen services.

In March 2017, a discussion between YALSA's board members resulted in board document #32 at Annual 2017, which discussed the re-envisioning of TTW and TRW. As a result, a taskforce will be put together to work on proposing ideas for the new awareness campaign.

Books 'n' Bites - "The Last of the Menu Girls" by Denise Chavez

Category: Adults Books 'n' Bites - "The Last of the Menu Girls" by Denise Chavez

    March 13, 2019

Join us! as we continue with programming of this years One Book One Valley.

Like every year, in the month of March we discuss the selected book.
For this 2019 it will be "The Last of the Menu Girls" by Denise Chavez

Rocío Esquibel is a girl growing up in a Southern New Mexico town with her mother and sister. She defines her neighborhood by its trees—the willow, the apricot and the one they call the marking-off tree. Rocio knows she was born in the closet where she and her sister now take turns looking at the picture of Jesus whose eyes light up in the dark. But at night she enters a magical realm, and in her imaginary Blue Room, she can fly. At first she is a mesmerized observer of the lives of older girls and their boyfriends, but as she finds a job at the local hospital, and discovers a passion for drama and stories, Rocio begins to make her own choices in love and work.

Alive with the taste of tamales and the lyrical tang of the Esquibels’ talk, The Last of the Menu Girls becomes a rich celebration of Chicano culture, and a universal story of finding one’s way in the world.

Cuentos de Aztlan, Stories From the Homeland, is an engaging and illuminating journey into the Latino soul as expressed in traditional and modern stories. The show features fascinating tales from Angel’s vast repertoire of stories. The show includes morality tales explaining the lesson of right and wrong, instructive animal fables, chistes, short comics tales guaranteed to amuse, as well as amazing tales of wonder, transformation and magic.
