Community Meditation

February 28, 2017

Meditation is commonly described as the practice of focusing our mental attention to awaken us beyond habitual thinking, so to reveal the nature of reality -- what is happening here and now.  Although there are many approaches to deepening our awareness of presence, the art of practice lies in embracing the process with curiosity, kindness and a light touch.  Vail Public Library is pleased to offer community members the opportunity to share in their meditative journey from a community approach.

Please join others in the Community Room at Vail Public Library for weekly meditation gatherings on Tuesdays. Whether you are well along the path, just beginning to develop a practice or simply interested in exploring the path of meditation with others, we invite you to join community members in a weekly meditation gathering.   Meditation gatherings are informal, following no specific approach, practice or formalities.  Each session will open with a brief welcome and inspirational passage, followed by calming, breathing techniques and a 30-minute meditation session.  Sessions will close with brief comment or further inspirational thought from varied disciplines. Chairs are available or those preferring are welcome to bring a meditation cushion.

Women are Not Small Men

March 7, 2017

2014 National Ski Hall of Famer Jeannie Thoren is back once again to share her popular presentation, “Women are not Small Men,” and explain its driving philosophy. Thoren will explain the differences in male and female skeletal structure and how these differences influence one’s ability to make a ski perform properly. She will also discuss the evolution of women-specific ski equipment and the need for gender-specific equipment. The most common skiing problems for women are: sitting back, ski tips wander or cross, heels lifting in the boots, cold feet and/or cramping, fatiguing easily and skiing “knock-kneed.” Thoren has  been recognized for her work by Skiing Magazine, North American Snowsport Journalists Association, and the Skiing for Women Hall of Fame. And, of course, men are welcome to attend!”

Books 'n' Bites

March 8, 2017

This month's selection is "The High Divide" by Lin Enger. Our One Book One Valley selection for 2017! Summary: "In 1886, Gretta Pope wakes up one morning to discover that her husband is gone. Ulysses Pope has left his family behind on the far edge of Minnesota’s western prairie, with only a brief note and no explanation for why he left or where he’s heading. It doesn’t take long for Gretta’s young sons, Eli and Danny, to set off after him, leaving Gretta no choice but to search out the boys and their father and bring them all home.

Enger’s breathtaking portrait of the vast plains landscape is matched by the rich expanse of the story’s emotional terrain, in which pivotal historical events coincide with the intimate story of a family’s sacrifice and devotion."
