"The Silver Arrow" by Lev Grossman

Kate and her younger brother Tom lead dull, uninteresting lives. And if their dull, uninteresting parents are anything to go by, they don’t have much to look forward to. Why can’t Kate have thrilling adventures and save the world the way people do in books? Even her 11th birthday is shaping up to be mundane — that is, until her mysterious and highly irresponsible Uncle Herbert, whom she’s never even met before, surprises her with the most unexpected, exhilarating, inappropriate birthday present of all time: a colossal steam locomotive called the Silver Arrow.
Kate and Tom’s parents want to send it right back where it came from. But Kate and Tom have other ideas — and so does the Silver Arrow — and soon they’re off to distant lands along magical rail lines in the company of an assortment of exotic animals who, it turns out, can talk. With only curiosity, excitement, their own resourcefulness and the thrill of the unknown to guide them, Kate and Tom are on the adventure of a lifetime . . . and who knows? They just might end up saving the world after all.
This thrilling fantasy adventure will not only entertain young readers but inspire them to see the beautiful, exciting, and precious world around them with new eyes.

Virtual Books 'n Bites - “The library book” by Susan Orlean

June 14, 2023

The library's book club meets each month for a fun and lively virtual book club experience!

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom.

Email Sandy at SRivera@vailgov.com for an invitation to the monthly Books ‘n’ Bites.

Join us! this month when we will discuss the book:

“The library book” by Susan Orlean

On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was ‘Goodbye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library–and, if so, who? Weaving her lifelong love of books and reading into an investigation of the fire, award-winning New Yorker reporter and bestselling author Susan Orlean deliver a mesmerizing and uniquely compelling book that manages to tell the broader story of libraries and librarians in a way that has never been done before. In The Library Book, Orlean chronicles the LAPL fire and its aftermath to showcase the larger, crucial role that libraries play in our lives; delves into the evolution of libraries across the country and around the world, from their humble beginnings as a metropolitan charitable initiative to their current status as a cornerstone of national identity; brings each department of the library to vivid life through on-the-ground reporting; studies arson and attempts to burn a copy of a book herself; reflects on her own experiences in libraries; and reexamines the case of Harry Peak, the blond-haired actor long suspected of setting fire to the LAPL more than thirty years ago. Along the way, Orlean introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters from libraries past and present–from Mary Foy; who in 1880 at eighteen years old was named the head of the Los Angeles Public Library at a time when men still dominated the role, to Dr. C.J.K. Jones, a pastor, citrus farmer, and polymath known as “The Human Encyclopedia” who roamed the library dispensing information; from Charles Lummis, a wildly eccentric journalist, and adventurer who was determined to make the L.A. library one of the best in the world, to the current staff, who do heroic work every day to ensure that their institution remains a vital part of the city it serves. Brimming with her signature wit, insight, compassion, and talent for deep research, The Library Book is Susan Orlean’s thrilling journey through the stacks that reveals how these beloved institutions provide much more than just books–and why they remain an essential part of the heart, mind, and soul of our country. It is also a master journalist’s reminder that perhaps especially in the digital era, they are more necessary than ever.

HOLDING SPACE: COMMUNITY PORTRAITS 2020-2022 EXHIBITION TOUR & ARTIST TALK WITH PHOTOGRAPHER STAS GINZBURG

June 21, 2023

Pride month shows how far we’ve come, and how far we have yet to go.

Pride month prompts parades, celebrations, and demonstrations, promoting LGBTQ+ visibility and equality. It falls in June, to mark the Stonewall riots for gay rights in New York in 1969 that spawned the first such march.

Since the murder of George Floyd, a resurgence of activism, from Black Lives Matter to Stop Asian Hate to advocacy for trans, immigrant and sex workers’ rights, has filled the streets. Queer and trans voices of color have come to the forefront of this fight for collective freedom.

These portraits by Stas Ginzburg celebrate and create visibility for our LGBTQ+ siblings who live unapologetically in their truth while advocating for the rights of all marginalized communities.

This exhibition has been organized by Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art and will be on view in the Library's Community Room for the month of June.

Evenings of Engagement with Harper Powell

June 28, 2023

Evenings of Engagement is a series of events aimed at adults, with the purpose of offering exciting, interesting, fun or educational experiences.

Join us in the library's community room for this fun concert featuring

Harper Powell

Harper Powell is a BMI songwriter from Salida, Colorado, who started singing not long after she began taking her first steps. A strong bent of classic rock requires a second listen to appear clearly to the average listener. Like a young Alison Krauss, Harper marries the offbeat visionary style of Syd Barrett with the dark conceptualization of Grace Slick to beget a brand-new but still retro-inspired musical statement.
