Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The 2019 theme, Connect, Create, Contribute, encourages older adults and their communities to:

    • Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
    • Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
    • Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

Springtime enlivens the forests of our beautiful Rocky Mountains. Colorado's culturally modified trees (CMTs), have been altered but not permanently harmed for a specific purpose. The Ute Peoples of Colorado practiced cultural modification on various pines, junipers and even aspen. Join us in the library’s Community Room for a presentation on CMT’s, with light refreshments & the company of great friends. Folks who have difficulty walking longer distances may be dropped off at the front doors of the library.

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book — a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world. “My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.” So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her — her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

    Jacki Benson May 16th-31st, 2019

Local Artist Jacqui Allen-Benson paints primarily in oil getting her inspiration from her faith and the beautiful Colorado Landscape. After serving in the Marine Corp during the Vietnam War she attended college where she studied Horticultural Science with a particular emphasis on Soil Science and Landscape Design.  After moving to Colorado in 1978 she was drawn to Faith based social work.  After spending many years in that profession she joined her husband Hugo Benson in their printing business OG Printer in Gypsum where she has worked for the past 19 years. She has been occasionally using her professional design; gardening and self taught painting skills for stress relief. Although still working part time at the print shop doing the direct mailing piece because she is the only certified “Mail quality control specialist”. She has begun what she jokes is her 9th life. Currently she has sold much to her surprise 12 pieces of her art work. “People always buy the pieces I like best so than I have to paint another one” All of Jacqui’s paintings have faces for which it is fun to find in the landscapes.  Her subject matter consists mostly of local spots that she re-landscapes in her paintings to suit herself trying to show you all the faces sharing this world with you.
