February 20, 2019(2 events) Huichol Yarn Painting (One Book One Valley Event) – As part of this year's One Book One Valley (OBOV) programming, we are offering a night of Huichol Yarn Painting, a tradition belonging to the Huichol (pronounced Wee-chole) people of Mexico. Until recently, the Huichol people did not have an official language and rather, communicated through such mediums as their artwork. Famous for their beautiful yarn paintings called nierikas, (pronounced near-eekas) the Huichol people have been known to create them using a natural glue, often made from tree resin and beeswax. Once the glue is applied to a board, yarn is pressed on and left to harden. The designs made by the Huichol people typically depict their myths, stories and daily activities. Their designs also depict their belief that human beings are firmly connected to nature. Come Join us! and make your very own nierika! This event is free and open to the public. |
