Come and hear Dave Lively, a historian, present “Rocky’s West Side Stories” Wednesday, June 28 at 5:30pm. “Rocky’s West Side Stories” will take you on a speedy tour connecting the common threads of survival and success the past 11,000 years in a highly isolated mountain valley. Always transient, the ebb and flow of passing cultures has influenced life today in this unique alpine corner of our nation. Come and enjoy stories of human nature encountering Mother Nature in what is now the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Dave Lively is a dynamic speaker who specializes in shining light on absent narratives. He creates programs about local history for groups large and small. His stories of remarkable characters from the past engage audiences and bring deeper understanding and appreciation for where we are today.

Common Cents for Colorado Seminar #3 - Retirement Savings Vehicles

This seminar explores three widely available core financial investment categories: stocks, bonds, and cash equivalents. Participants will review the definition of each category, then go on to examine how the security types trades, their advantages and disadvantages, and acquisition strategies. Asset allocation models appropriate for various life stages will be discussed. Various buying methods for each class will be reviewed, with a thorough discussion of mutual funds and ETFs that now dominate individual investing. The seminar would be ideal for anyone who wants a better understanding of the investment choices available in the complex financial markets. The goal will be for each participant to establish a personal allocation model that is both comfortable and comprehendible, with awareness of cost and risks as well as potential return.

Books 'n' Bites - Book Club

This month's title "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. "The Book Thief" is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul. The year is 1939. The place is Nazi Germany. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist-books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

Common Cents for Colorado Seminar #5 - Managing Money During Retirement

This seminar explores concepts and theories associated with managing money during a happy and relaxing retirement.  Participants will review the changing landscape of retirement with its growing challenges, e.g., increasing longevity,  increasing medical costs, lower Social Security benefits, disappearing pensions, need for financial expertise, etc. Then the seminar will explore various plans for making money last through a secure retirement.  Major discussion will be spent on methods for determining spending during retirement, allocation for remaining assets, guarding against inflation, deciding safety net needs and plans, and hints for reducing unnecessary expenses and extending limited assets while enjoying life more.  The seminar is recommended for anyone who is struggling with the retirement conundrum of managing assets so they last through a comfortable retirement. This includes those who have  already entered retirement, those who are about to enter retirement, and those who are thinking about the retirement issues ahead. The seminar is also a great review of all the concepts discussed in prior seminars.
