"TEN PICTURES: A HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY" A LECTURE BY PETER HAY HALPERT5:30 pm – 6:30 pm The ancient Greeks first discovered the principles of the camera obscura sometime between the IV and V centuries B.C. but photography as we know it was invented in the XIX century. The first “photograph” was taken by Joseph Niepce in 1814, however, it wasn’t until 1839, when Louis Daguerre and William Henry Fox Talbot simultaneously released completely different processes for capturing and holding an image, that we entered the age of photography. Today, photography is a language that everybody speaks. We walk around with cameras in our pockets, in the form of our smartphones. Photography is the medium of our times; we instinctively understand and relate to photographic images, while contemporary paintings often require some kind of explanation and context. How did we get to this point in less than 200 years? |
September 1, 2022(2 events) September is Library Card Sign-Up Month N/A September is Library Card Sign-up Month when libraries nationwide join the American Library Association (ALA) to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning. Libraries play a crucial role in the education and development of children, offering a variety of programs to spark creativity and stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Through access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams, explore new passions and interests, and find their voice. This year, Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel, will serve as honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Idina and Cara are excited to remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library. During Library Card Sign-Up Month, they want us to explore all the library has to offer, like-new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming. Vail Public Library along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving community needs. To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit vaillibrary.com/library-card-basics/

Virtual Books 'n Bites - “The beekeeper of Aleppo: a novel” by Christy Lefteri5:00 pm – 6:30 pm Join us each month for a fun and lively virtual book club experience! We meet on the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom. Email Sandy at SRivera@vailgov.com for an invitation to the monthly Books ‘n’ Bites. Every morning, Nuri the beekeeper rises early to hear the call to prayer before driving to his hives in the countryside. On weekends, his wife Afra, a gifted artist, sells her paintings at the open-air market in the square. They live simply, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo — until the unthinkable happens. When all they love is destroyed by war, Nuri knows they have no choice except to leave their home. But escaping Syria will be no easy task: Afra has lost her sight, leaving Nuri to navigate her grief as well as a perilous journey toward an uncertain future in Britain. Moving, intimate, and beautifully written, this is a story for our times: It reminds us that our lives can be upended instantly — and brings a journey in faraway lands close to home, never to be forgotten. |
