Books 'n' Bites5:00 pm – 6:00 pm This month's Book Club selection is "Our Souls at Night," by Kent Haruf. This is the tender and inspiring story of a man and a woman who, in their later years, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the imminent future. Set in Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf's fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis's wife. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction. Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with. Their tentative steps towards building a relationship are told compassionately and quietly humorously. "Our Souls at Night"s the final installment in Haruf's novels about Holt. Haruf died in 2014. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact the library at 970-479-2187 or libinfo@vailgov.com. Crafts & Canvas with Vail Recreation District6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Join Vail Public Library and Vail Recreation District for an evening of woodworking! You will construct a coat rack from recycled pallet wood and tree branches with instruction and hand tools provided by local woodworker, Caleb Eaton.

Books 'n' Bites5:00 pm – 6:30 pm This month’s selection is: “The Rosie Project: A Novel” by Graeme Simsion. Summary: The art of love is never a science: Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers. Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities. Don easily disqualifies her as a candidate for The Wife Project (even if she is “quite intelligent for a barmaid”). But Don is intrigued by Rosie’s own quest to identify her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on The Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie―and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.
