I practice with a variety of mediums to mediums range from colored marker, colored pencil, watercolor, and oil pastel. Books 'n' Bites - “The Dinner” by Herman Koch

January 9, 2019

Join us each month for a fun and lively book club experience! enjoy the beauty of nature through a window & join in a discussion of the book of the month over light refreshments.

The selection for the month of January is… “The Dinner” by Herman Koch

Two brothers and their wives meet for dinner at a fashionable restaurant in Amsterdam. Behind their polite conversation, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.

In Mar., look for VPL staffers, Mary McDougall and Jo Norris. Attendees must have their own ski pass, the library will not be providing lift tickets or refreshments. 10th Mountain Division Presentation with Tom Duhs

January 16, 2019

During this 90-minute lecture on the 10th Mountain Division, Tom Duhs will take his attendees through a series of power point slides that explain, in depth, how the division operated. Tom's presentation will delve into such topics as the war years, how the division recruited its servicemen, training at Camp Hale, and finally, how and where they fought in Italy. Pete Seibert, the founder of Vail Ski Resort, was a 10th Mountain Division soldier during World War II. Tom Duhs has been giving this lecture twice per month at libraries, museums, ski clubs, climbing and ski shops, and even Colorado Mountain College for the past 2 years. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the library at libinfo@vailgov.com or 970-479-2187.

January 17th – 31st, 2019

Through the technique of gestural abstraction, Jessica Wright invites us into a world of enchantment: a world of forested landscapes that are sometimes burning and bright and other times shrouded in mist. Self-taught, Jess has been painting since the age 12. About four years ago she abandoned the brush—after more than 25 years of work—and hit upon a “throwing” technique that employs acrylics, chopsticks and, of late, her own hands. Her paintings come to life with color and texture—and an immediacy that produces an almost child-like state of wonder and awe in the viewer.

Family Loteria Night

January 24, 2019

¡Corre y se va! Jugando lotería!

Lotería is a traditional Latin-American game of chance, similar to bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of plain numbers on ping pong balls. Every image has a name and an assigned number, but the number is usually ignored. Each player has at least one tabla, a board with a randomly created 4 x 4 grid of pictures with their corresponding name and number.

Come with your family, meet new people, enjoy beverages, and maybe even learn some Spanish.

Evenings of Engagement with A.J. Fullerton

January 30, 2019

Raised as an only child in the mountains of rural Western Colorado, A.J. was brought up surrounded by numerous styles of music ranging from; Rock, Folk, Bluegrass, Roots, & Blues. His biggest musical influences ended up being found in his parents' collection of Classic Rock & Blues records. Playing solo, and in local bands throughout his mid-teens, by age 19 he was playing full-time supporting his rapidly developing solo career. His style of playing falls somewhere between the finger picking & slide of Country Roots music, and the groove based uptempo sensibilities of Blues and Rock & Roll.

Underwater photography for Greg Clifton represents a convergence of two longstanding passions – diving and taking pictures. Greg is excited, and quite honored, to have the chance to showcase some of his favorite images stemming from dive trips over the past four years in Central America. The exhibit (his first!) will consist of 21 images taken from the waters of southern Belize, Bonaire, Roatan, Utila, and Cayman. Consisting largely of corals, tropical fish and some larger seafaring species (including the world’s largest fish – the whale shark), the images are shared to underscore the incredible beauty and rich diversity of coral ecosystems, while raising awareness of their fragile nature and declining status in recent years.
