Underwater photography for Greg Clifton represents a convergence of two longstanding passions – diving and taking pictures. Greg is excited, and quite honored, to have the chance to showcase some of his favorite images stemming from dive trips over the past four years in Central America. The exhibit (his first!) will consist of 21 images taken from the waters of southern Belize, Bonaire, Roatan, Utila, and Cayman. Consisting largely of corals, tropical fish and some larger seafaring species (including the world’s largest fish – the whale shark), the images are shared to underscore the incredible beauty and rich diversity of coral ecosystems, while raising awareness of their fragile nature and declining status in recent years.

Vail Public Library’s (VPL) Skiing Book Club takes readers to the slopes for an active book club. We meet in the area between the water fountain near Bistro 14 and Gondoly's Pizza at the top of Eagle's Nest Gondola, to talk books and then ski (we intend to ski blue, groomed slopes). Attendees must have their own ski pass, the library will not be providing lift tickets or refreshments. Our Skiing Book Club is a fun, social outing, but at the same time you are getting the mental and physical activity essential to a healthy brain.

Creating a Paper Trail for Your Heirs - Get Your Financial House in Order with a Master List Notebook.
This is the second class in a 2-part series designed to help you get organized in the New Year! (The first class is on Jan 29, 2019 - attend one or both!) This class will help you get started in the creation of a Master List Notebook. A Master List Notebook provides information and instructions for your heirs if you are no longer able to manage or are no longer around. Its checklists ensure that your assets are discoverable and that your wishes are known and followed. The notebook is also a great grab and run resource in case of emergencies. Participants will receive forms to start their own Master List Notebook, but will need to provide their own 3-ring binder. RSVP required – please contact Mary McDougall at 970-479-2186 or at mmcdougall@vail.com to RSVP or for more information. Note: This class is part of the Common Cents for Colorado Financial Literacy Program.

Join us! this month for a fun and lively book club experience featuring "Everybody's Son" by bestselling, critically acclaimed author, Thrity Umrigar. Some of her previous works include "Bombay Time," "The World We Found," and "The Space Between Us." In "Everybody's Son," Umrigar explores issues of race, class, privilege and power, asking us, her readers, to weigh in on some rather agonizing moral questions.
The novel follows two families—one black, one white. A sweltering heat wave in 1991 leaves young Anton to think beyond his year, escaping his apartment in the projects after surviving several days without air conditioning or parental supervision. When police find him, he is covered in blood. His mother, Juanita, on the other hand, is found in the home of a drug dealer. Anton is ultimately taken into child services, while his mother is taken into custody.
On the flip-side, the story follows the Harvard-educated son of a US senator, Judge David Coleman. As the progeny of white privilege, David uses his power and connections to keep his new foster son, Anton. Following in his adoptive family's footsteps, eventually rising to power himself, Anton discovers the truth about his life and will have to come to terms with the moral complexities of the actions committed by those around him.

As part of this year's One Book One Valley (OBOV) programming, we are offering a night of Huichol Yarn Painting, a tradition belonging to the Huichol (pronounced Wee-chole) people of Mexico. Until recently, the Huichol people did not have an official language and rather, communicated through such mediums as their artwork. Famous for their beautiful yarn paintings called nierikas, (pronounced near-eekas) the Huichol people have been known to create them using a natural glue, often made from tree resin and beeswax. Once the glue is applied to a board, yarn is pressed on and left to harden. The designs made by the Huichol people typically depict their myths, stories and daily activities. Their designs also depict their belief that human beings are firmly connected to nature. Come Join us! and make your very own nierika! This event is free and open to the public.
