“Ute Culturally Modified Trees” A Virtual Presentation with Lynn Albers, Vail Public Library’s Local History and Ethnobotany Specialist

April 1, 2021

Learn about trees that are living artifacts created by the Colorado Utes.   A culturally modified tree (CMT) may be described as a tree that has been altered by an indigenous people, such as the Utes, for a specific purpose.  Cultural modification of trees includes peeling the outer bark to obtain the precious inner bark for food, medicine, ceremony and practical daily life uses.  Distinctively peeled Colorado ponderosa pines are rare and impermanent reminders of the Ute way of life.

This event will take place via Zoom Meeting. No registration required.

Amnesty Month STARTS

N/A
April 4, 2021

In celebration of National Library Week, Vail Public Library will again offer Amnesty Month from April 4, 2021 through April 30, 2021.

This is an effort to recover overdue library materials by offering a “fine free” month. We encourage the return of needed library materials and to promote increased use of the library. While some materials are simply lost, a great many are still in the hands of the patrons who checked them out. With a "no questions asked" amnesty period, the embarrassment and fear of paying large fines as obstacles to the return of long-overdue materials will be removed.

The amnesty does not include overdue fines still on record from previously returned materials, nor does it include fines for lost and/or damaged items.

The theme for National Library Week 2021 is "Welcome to Your Library."

During the pandemic, library workers continue to exceed their communities' demands and adapt resources and services to meet their users' needs during these challenging times. Whether people visit in person or virtually, libraries offer endless opportunities to transform lives through education and lifelong learning.

April 6, 2021

Librarians across the United States celebrate National Library Workers’ Day (NLWD) on the Tuesday of National Library Week, held in April every year.

While we cannot have in-person celebrations, it is still a good time to highlight the critical role library workers play in keeping our libraries running.

Give a shout out to a library worker you know. Discovery all the resources your library offers. Support your library and its staff. When budget time comes for your city or state, do your part to support your library.

Join us for yoga from the comfort of your own home! Email:  Sandy at SRivera@vailgov.com for an invitation to the Zoom meeting.

Vail Public Library's Gentle Yoga Class, taught by Anne Anderson, Certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher, Registered with Yoga Alliance, Professional Ski Instructor of America at Vail, is appropriate for those who want a softer, nurturing, slow-paced, well-supported and relaxing practice. The approach  includes carefully orchestrated movements, controlled pressure, and well-measured stretches, including range of motion exercises. Postures may be approached in gradual steps, with plenty of time to focus on breathing and repetition so that the practice is simple to do and easy to remember.

Gentle yoga style encourages a highly individualized approach to practice with on-going encouragement to make moment-to-moment adjustments.
