Evening of Engagement: Linda Batlin as "Doc Susie"

March 7, 2018

The Story of Doc Susie
Dr. Susan Anderson, or "Doc Susie" as she was called, was the first woman doctor in Fraser, CO. She arrived there in 1907 and practiced medicine until 1956. The story tells of Doc Susie's life, of how she became a doctor and moved to the Fraser valley and set up her practice. It tells of her struggles, challenges and triumphs in treating the lumberjacks, ranchers and railroaders of the area over the many years. It also tells of the many changes she saw over the years, like the building of the Moffat Tunnel. When she first arrived the men scoffed at her because she was a woman doctor but after awhile they would say "Call Doc Susie; she'll come if she has to walk!"

Join us for a living history presentation of the life and times of Doc Susie, presented by Linda Batlin

Vail Public Library’s Skiing Book Club takes readers to the slopes for an active book club!

We meet in the area between the water fountain near Bistro 14 and Gondoly's Pizza at the top of Eagle's Nest Gondola, to talk books and then ski (we intend to ski blue, groomed slopes)!

Look for VPL staffers Mary McDougall and Jo Norris. Attendees must have their own ski pass, the library will not be providing lift tickets or refreshments. Our Skiing Book Club is a fun, social outing, but at the same time you are getting the mental and physical activity essential to a healthy brain.

For more information, please contact either Jo Norris at 970-479-2195 or Mary McDougall at 970-479-2186.

The selection for March is the One Book One Valley title selection - "Underground Airlines" by Ben Winter.

Movie Night OBOV- The Spies of Mississippi

March 15, 2018

Join us for the Vail premier: " The Spies of Mississippi"

Spies of Mississippi tells the story of a secret spy agency formed by the state of Mississippi to preserve segregation and maintain white supremacy. The anti-civil rights organization was hidden in plain sight in an unassuming office in the Mississippi State Capitol. Funded with taxpayer dollars and granted extraordinary latitude to carry out its mission, the Commission evolved from a propaganda machine into a full blown spy operation. How do we know this is true? The Commission itself tells us in more than 146,000 pages of files preserved by the State. This wealth of first person primary historical material guides us through one of the most fascinating and yet little known stories of America's quest for Civil Rights.

Evening of Engagement with Fiddler Elizabeth Plotkin

March 21, 2018

Join us for an evening of engagement with Crested Butte musician and singer Elizabeth Plotkin!

Lizzy Plotkin’s place-based songwriting and fiddling is as exuberant as is it graceful. With reverence for the natural world and a humble, yet wise human perspective, Lizzy shares with listeners her joy and connection through original story, melody and voice.

The sounds of Appalachian fiddles and banjos enliven Lizzy’s music, while she is equally drawn to the groove of old-jazz, blues and swing. Seamlessly combining a rich heritage of musical influence, she has sewn a folk fabric of her own.

Join Us for the Vail Public Library documentary film:

"Slavery By Another Name"

SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME is a 90-minute documentary that challenges one of Americans' most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality.
