National Library Week 2022

During National Library Week April 3-9
Connect with Your Library

This week, Vail Public Library (VPL) encourages all community members to visit their library in person or online to explore and access services and programs. VPL offers a wide array of programs and resources that are available in person or from the comfort of home: in-person Storytime, music concerts, digital collection, databases, virtual book discussions, and virtual Yoga.

April 3 – 9, 2022, is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to connect to technology via wi-fi, computers, printers, and other resources. In addition to books, libraries also offer opportunities to connect with media, programs, ideas, and classes. Most importantly, libraries connect communities to each other.

All types of libraries go above and beyond to keep their communities engaged with expanded access and inclusion through programs, resources, and collections. Libraries across the country make a difference in people’s lives by providing electronic learning resources such as online homework help and wi-fi access for students and workers who may lack home internet.

VPL supports its community with services such as The One Card One Valley (OCOV) Program for all Eagle County Students. This program provides all students in public schools free access to library materials by using their Student I.D. number. VPL is a distribution spot for free KN95 Masks and COVID-19 Rapid tests in cooperation with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment outreach. The 2022 community-wide reading program, One Book One Valley (OBOV) features Colorado author Sandra Dallas, and her title “Tallgrass.” Community programs began in February and conclude in April, with an evening with the author. Additionally, the Safeway book drop, removed during the pandemic, returns in March! This much-needed service will have a new book return in the same convenient location. (Made possible in part by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.)

In celebration of National Library Week, VPL will offer an Amnesty Month in April. This effort aids in the return of overdue library materials, offering a “fine free” month. The purpose of the amnesty is to encourage the return of overdue items and to promote the use of the library. (Amnesty does not include outstanding fines from previously returned materials, nor does it include fines for lost and/or damaged items.) While some materials are simply lost, a great many are still in the hands of patrons who checked them out. With a “no questions asked” amnesty period, the embarrassment and worry of large fines is no longer an obstacle to the return of long-overdue materials. Once again, this April, the library will host the popular LED lightbulb swap. Community members can save money and cut climate pollution by exchanging two, inefficient old-tech lightbulbs for two high-efficiency LED lightbulbs, for FREE.

This year’s National Library Week the public can show appreciation and support for libraries by visiting their library in person or online and following them on social media using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek.
