January 27, 2016 –
Come and get a fencing demonstration from Cooter Overcash.
The fencing program was started 10 years ago by Don Watson, an entertainer in the valley. The program has moved from Vail Mountain School, to the Vail Rec District, Avon Rec Center and then finally found a home at Battle Mountain HS where the high school team was established. BMHS and the school district have been supporters of the program and now a club at Eagle Valley High School has been established. Coach Watson and Coach Overcash are both professional members of USA fencing and we receive our lessons from Maitre John Wills, who was given his Masters from Cornell and who is mentioned in the Fencing Hall of Fame as one of the best students of his Master, Jean Jacque Gillet.
Fencing is considered physical chess. Whether you like Princess Bride, Star Wars, or the Musketeers this is the sport that teaches what fencing was really like. The Vail Fencing club primarily teaches Epee (of the 3 weapons), where the entire body is a target. We are a success based program and each member is charged with teaching and advancing the program. Everybody fences everybody and fencers can go to actual tournaments if that is the direction they choose.
Attire is a t-shirt, (padding is provided and extra clothing is hot), sweats or jeans and athletic shoes. No shorts, short shirts, or open toed shoes allowed.
