September 1, 2023A Library Card is ELEMENTAL!
Get in Your Element this September—sign up for a library card! From borrowing books, ebooks, and museum passes to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending story time, a library card helps you do more of what you enjoy. Get a library card and dive into a new hobby. Use your library card to tinker in a maker space and spark your creativity. A library card is your most important school supply—it's elemental, really—and everyone should have one!
Celebrate and Spread the Word
Visit your library to see what's new and take part in the celebration. Libraries across the country are participating. Do you have friends who don't have a library card? Invite them to sign up during September.

"Stella" by McCall Hoyle
Ever since she was a puppy, Stella was trained to use her powerful beagle nose to sniff out dangerous chemicals and help her handler keep people safe. But during a routine security inspection, Stella misses the scent of an explosive. The sound of the blast is loud and scary. Unable to go back to work because of her anxiety, Stella is retired as a working dog.
When a young girl named Cloe wants to adopt Stella, the beagle knows this is her last chance to prove her worth. But how? When Stella smells a strange chemical inside Cloe’s body, a scent that surges just before the girl has a seizure, Stella’s nose makes the connection. But how can Stella warn her new family without them thinking she’s having an anxiety attack? How can she convince others that she can be a new kind of service dog and hopefully save Cloe’s life? Told from Stella’s perspective, this story is about a special dog who must find the courage to overcome her fears in order to help save a young girl with epilepsy.RSVP to Erin at EStege@vail.gov
Virtual Books 'n Bites: “State of Wonder” by Ann PatchettVirtual Books 'n Bites: “State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett

September 13, 2023The library's book club meets each month for a fun and lively virtual book club experience!
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom.
Email Sandy at SRivera@vail.gov for an invitation to the monthly Books ‘n’ Bites.
Join us! this month when we will discuss the book:
In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, State of Wonder presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity.
As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she’s forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness.
Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest’s jeweled canopy. Patchett delivers a gripping adventure story and a profound look at the difficult choices we make in the name of discovery and love.“State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett -

The Great Annular Eclipse of 2023 with photographer and naturalist Rick SpitzerThe Great Annular Eclipse of 2023 with photographer and naturalist Rick Spitzer
–
September 27, 2023Join photographer and naturalist Rick Spitzer and learn about the Great American Annular Eclipse of 2023.
This eclipse will cross the Western United States on Saturday, October 14th.
Seven states are on the path. The maximum eclipse will pass over the Four Corners of Colorado. Eagle County will view an 80% eclipse at 10:34 AM.
An Annular Solar Eclipse is not the same as a Total Eclipse. The moon travels in an elliptical orbit. When the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, a Total Eclipse may occur, and the entire sun is covered. When the moon is farther from Earth in its orbit, an Annular Eclipse may occur, and the entire sun is not covered.
