"Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists.... When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence."

—Erich Fromm (1900-80) German-born American psychoanalyst, emphasized role of social conditioning

How do the facts of history give rise to fiction? This question will be explored at a slide show and reading from "Mariano's Crossing," and award-winning historical novel by David M. Jessup. Historical photos of some of the book's characters, along with pictures of locations from the novel's setting, will be included. Jessup's novel was recently nominated as one of three finalists for the 2013 Colorado Book Award, in addition to winning first place in the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Contest.
